My history with the Fleshtones goes way back to the late 70's-early 80's ( the first time I heard them, at Irving Plaza in New York, I turned around and noticed Debbie Harry was standing next to me, and I once saw R.E.M. open for them,) and the last time I saw them was at one of those mid-80's Jimmy's shows. Back when I was a fan, I was attracted to their desperation of being unable to imagine a time when they would not be Fleshtones, or perhaps the desperation of not being able to imagine a time when their three-chord rocknroll would no longer matter to any, perhaps even themselves. Their do-or-die commitment made their material transcendent, at least for me, for a time. But sometime you have to get off the van, something the Ramones could never imagine either.
