I found it very sad that Quint's ego would allow him to mention only Bonnaroo, Coachella and ACL, and specifically not Voodoo, when comparing his festival to the offerings of others. When as you point out, many acts have played voodoo in past years and its obviously his biggest competition, his purposeful leave out was just plain sad. Come to think of it, when those other events announce their lineups, do you see Charles Attel or the Superfly guys at a microphone giving 30 minute speeches? Very telling. Hey Quint - you lost the Essence account to Rehage, everyone in the industry knows why, get over it. Move on. Its over.

I am not a Jazz Fest hater and attend one or two days a year - now with my 6 year old daughter. But I think you are right in that this festival has allowed complacency to become the norm. When the only real changes from years past are another "VIP" offering for the rich folks, the festival has gone from being a celebration of music to being a big, big paycheck. As in any job, when you stop doing it for the passion and are more consumed by the dollar, your product's quality is going to go down.

Technically Third World has also played Fest. It was back in - help me out, brain - maybe 1982 and it was a night show on the President with, I believe, a Haitian voodoo ballet troupe (mind-blowing) and Burning Spear. If someone with a working brain wants to correct me, please do.

It's always a challenge for the festival to come up with jazz greats over the age of 80 (the apparent minimum age for consideration,) since they keep dying off. Hence Roy Haynes again. This does mean that Ornette may get to make a return appearance, since he should hit 80 in time for the 2010 festival. In the mean time, we can do a tribute to Miles Davis--that's a fresh idea. On-the-other-hand, it was nice to see that Kidd Jordan is back on the schedule. I hope they have the decency to pay his group at least as much as they offered him to play as a "guest" on someone else's set last year. But on the whole, this year's "jazz" line-up is an embarrassment--pretty much like every other year since Charlie Bering past.
